ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — A new way to prevent drunken driving is gaining popularity.

Designated Drivers on Demand not only gives you a ride, the service takes your car home, too. The new business comes as the metro area has seen several DWI fatalities this year, including the death of two babies.

A billboard promoting the service just went up along Montano. For $30 a month, participants and their cars get unlimited rides home.

The owner, who is a retired Albuquerque police sergeant, said he already has 700 members ensuring they don't drink and drive.

KRQE - New service to prevent DWIs

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) - Instead of taking drunk drivers to jail, a retired Albuquerque Police Officer is now taking them home for a small price.

Phil Baca founded the program called Designated Drivers on Demand . Customers pay a monthly fee of about $30 and receive rides home from anywhere in Albuquerque, Rio Rancho or Corrales.

Baca, a retired police officer, says the idea started when he was serving on the force and became starkly aware of the devastation caused by drunk drivers.

Now he says this is his way of continuing to tackle one of the state's biggest problems.

"Being a police officer of 20 years was very rewarding because you're helping people. You're helping the community," Baca said. "Doing this gives you that same feeling."

The program runs seven days a week, 24-hours-a-day.

The crew of about 18 people works in pairs so members don't have to leave their cars behind. Baca says he's studied reasons people choose to drink and drive, and being without their cars is top on the list.

"The next day they have to find out where their car is, has it been burglarized, has it been stolen, has it been towed, and then you have to find somebody who can get you back to your vehicle," said Baca.

There's no limit to how many times a customer can use the service each month, and Designated Drivers on Demand isn't just for those who may have had one too many. They'll also pick you up from the hospital after surgery or if you're elderly and need a ride.

There are also couple and family discounts. This is a licensed business and all employees must pass a through background check.

Albuquerque Beer Scene - Post

You May See a Lot More of Me - Tuesday, February 7, 2012

Not because I started eating again instead of skipping meals in favor of drinking, either. It's that I've just found out about Designated Drivers on Demand, a local service that drives you home in your car, saving you from: a)driving drunk, or b)leaving your car somewhere sketchy and having to find a ride to your car the next day, hoping that the windows aren't all smashed out. The monthly fee is $29.99 for an individual membership or $39.99 a month for couples who reside together. Couples? Sounds gay friendly- unlike the south. The price goes down $10 if you sign up for an entire year. There is an initial sign-up fee of $50 (sounds like joining a gym or something- you think Planet Fitness is really just $10 a month??) On those rare occasions I do leave the house to drink, I have to find a ride, and mom is often too busy/won't return my calls. Then a cab ride home costs me $25, so this Designated Drivers on Demand pays for itself in two nights out drinking. And God knows I can do a lot more than two nights out drinking a month. A hefty tip seems customary, but we all know someone who is paying The Man much more than a hefty tip after getting caught driving drunk.
